Dove Hunt April 2014

April was another month of good hunts. In the province of Cordoba, the world capital of dove shooting, as usual at this time of the year, the fields of sunflower and sorghum are ready to be harvested, making us move to different areas where the birds are looking for food.

In Salta province, we did some hunts in sorghum fields and flyways between roosting and eating areas. We also hunt in some feedlots. In both provinces, Cordoba and Salta, we got good hunting with high volume of doves.

At this time of the year, the hunts are conducted in flat lands rather than in the hills, until the end of May or early June, where in Cordoba, doves return to the roosts in the hills. In Salta we are waiting for the peanut and sorghum harvest for pigeon hunt.

With Walker’s group we did some premature pigeon hunt; the crops were not ready due to the late rains in the province. Despite of this, we were able to shoot a good number of pigeons. It was nice to share some days with Keith, Jason and Nick who made many competitions for 25 cents. Of course it was about fun and pride, not the money. Good shooting guys!

A great story to share with you was when our waitress in the field made a language mistake and called “chicken pie” to our dessert “cheese cake”! You should have seen their faces!

The rain in February and March in Cordoba was a really rare phenomenon compared to what we are used to. This was the rainiest summer we have seen in the last years. It was very important that all our guests remembered to bring their raincoats. John, next time try not to forget your rainy gear at the lodge! Luckily for you, I gave you my jacket.

The large amount of rain is very important for the fields, but sometimes this causes the birds to scatter in multiple sites. Fortunately, when this happens, in a week it all go back to normal. Now we are waiting the dry season to start which will last until spring. Days are getting colder and colder because the winter is approaching.

On the next few days, duck and mixed bag season will be officially open. If you are ready we have some spots available for you. Just give us a call.

One safety note: we have to be extremely careful when the rain comes with lightning because with guns could be very dangerous. Normally, if this happens, we stop shooting for a while.

In the coming days we will be testing the New Benelli’s super sport Cal 12 in duck and pigeon shooting. We will write a report in a couple of weeks. And we also will be sending you a duck hunting report in the next days. Till then,

My best,

Martin Andrada,
