Dove Hunt early 2014

Summarize from the last days. In Argentina, February is a month of holidays. Children do not attend to school and families take advantage of this to enjoy the warm and sunny days. Temperatures are more than pleasant and we were lucky enough to spend some lovely days in the field. As we told in the last report, we’ve been in Santa Fe searching for “dorados” (golden fish) and we’ve been hunting lots of doves in Cordoba.

Typically, February is a hot month with occasional rains, and this year was no exception. We had plenty of water in some fields like “Correa”, but fortunately, the doves continued to cooperate and kept flying all month despite the rain. A warm wind that came from the north met with a cold breeze from the south and caused a significant decrease in temperature. As a result, we had a more rainy days. On some of them we had to use our rain suits.

But we remember all the sunny days, the pleasant breezes and the best barbecues in the field, too. I remember our friend “Garito” saying “more meat sir, very good”; thanks to Carlos making his delicious “asados” with juicy fillets and medium pork meat. We were also surprised by some tasty desserts like “tiramisu” and a special pudding that will not forget.

The fields we were using in February are very close to both lodges: “Las Peñas” and “Plaza Real” are less than a 30 minutes-drive. To tell you the truth, we had a couple of days in which the fields turned to mud and worried us, but we accepted the challenge and had good results; even though we had to assist Miguel, a local gentlemen, when he got stuck in the mud one morning.

Doves are still flying in the mountains. We’ve started to search for areas near rout #9, anticipating their next move. We have a couple of feedlots that our clients will enjoy in March. Most days in March are really nice and no one misses the presence of mosquitoes.

We started to hunt around 9am in the morning until noon. Then we had a break and had lunch in the field. Brian almost broke the record “siesta” time with awesome 1:35 hours! Around 2:30 pm, we kept going until our shoulders gave no more and it was time for a “Dirty Martini”.

At this time of year, the rain can surprise us, even on a sunny day. Make sure you bring sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent (we could need it in March); and just in case a raincoat.

The last few days of hunting completely exceeded our expectations. We had a great volume of doves. For the most part we used semi-automatic Beretta 391s in 20 gauge and Benelli Montefeltros, also 20 gauge.

Thanks for your visit and hope to see you all soon,

Best regards,

Martin Andrada,

Head Guide
