NEWS & REPORTS

Doves have moved to the flat lands

The last weeks were not easy at all. In Northern Cordoba, doves had started the transition from the hills to the flat lands and crops areas earlier than normal. Most of the birds had gone from Macha valley and they know we are all driving in east direction for the best hunting fields.

What does it means? Well, it changes a lot how the hunt and the presentation of the doves works. In the hills, normally doves have a pattern and fly in the same flyways during most of the year; but during harvest time, they migrate to the flat lands and you never know their behavior.

Now, we are shooting mostly in feed lots and some crops fields. The issue today is to get high birds or different presentations because the terrain is all the same. So, we have an issue regarding Jonathan last week because he is from UK and he has passion for high birds and nice presentation.

Normally, at this time of the year we still have some high lovely birds in the hill, but this summer we were able to get some of the highest doves with Jonathan only in two of our fields. The good news is that even tough there are not many doves around we were able to shoot some high birds.

This last February was record on rains, seems that some wind from the north east brought more clouds than normal flying low and with warm pressure, and as soon as they get to the mountains and they were push high, the colder weather made it rain.

The rain was amazing, it had rained in one month almost what rains in all year round. We had in February 80% of our annual raining rate. The issue was that 50% of that rain had happened in one day, it was a furious black Sunday for us.

After a great day in the field the Saturday before, we found ourselves out in the middle of a strong rain that had took bridges and more than 1500 houses in the hills and made some of the roads almost impossible. We had a bad luck Sunday. Martin got stucked on the mud after a morning hunt. In half hour they had so much rain that when they wanted to get out of the field, the roads were impossible.

It is very important the guest attitude in this occasions, because it is not easy to get released from the mud in the middle of nowhere. Luckily; our head guide got a tractor and a couple of hours later we were ready for some more hunting.

So we have passed from a lovely sunny Saturday to a black rainy Sunday in just a couple of hours. The government had estimated damaged in more than a hundred million dollars, and most of the little towns close by to the hills is now trying to recover from this natural disaster. So, like you can see, it is not always good in terms of weather, but you will be surprised how green is everything in northern Cordoba these days.
